S. Margie Venus has over 25 years' experience representing clients in bankruptcy, business restructuring, creditors’ rights, and insolvency matters, including out-of- court workouts and chapter 11 bankruptcy cases in Texas, Delaware, New York, and other venues across the country. Prior to joining Strong Pipkin to lead its business bankruptcy, restructuring, and creditors' rights practice, Ms. Venus headed up the Houston financial restructuring practice of a large international law firm. She has extensive experience in representing creditors, creditors’ committees, debtors, and equity holders. Her practice also includes representing sellers and acquirers of distressed assets.

Representative Experience:

  • Served as counsel for the official committee of unsecured creditors in numerous complex chapter 11 cases in Texas, Louisiana, California, Delaware, New York, and other venues involving, among other, oil and gas companies, grocery and convenience store chains, an agricultural co-op, sugar producer, homebuilder, steel processing, chemicals, wholesalers, retailers, oil and gas service companies, bank holding company, furniture retailer, and tech company.
  • Represented debtors in complex chapter 11 cases, including chemical manufacturing companies, oil and gas companies, manufacturers, and restaurant chains.
  • Represented purchasers of distressed assets, including steel fabricating assets; assets of a debtor engaged in designing, constructing, converting, and repairing ocean-going vessels, drilling rigs, and offshore platforms; vessels used in supporting pipeline installation, subsea construction, and support services for the offshore oil and gas industry; a retail chain of junior specialty apparel stores; and a refinery facility.
  • Served as counsel to an official committee of equity holders in the chapter 11 case of a bank holding company.
  • Represented secured creditors, interest holders, and DIP lenders, including representations in cases involving the health industry, commercial real estate industry, steel industry and food industry.
  • Served as counsel to liquidating trustees, including the trustee of a computer products retailer and the trustee of an independent oil and gas exploration company.
  • Internationally, served as counsel to acquirer of media assets in South America, counsel to a South American government entity in connection with the recapitalization of its state-owned oil and gas company, and counsel to a European Union telecommunications company in the proposed acquisition of a Central American state-owned telephone company through the privatization process.
